Why I Finally Said Yes to a Solar Lease

How Amicus Impact brings the solar tax credit back to homeowners.

For 22 years, I’ve been advising homeowners against solar leases. Solar leases have typically been designed to benefit the leasing company at the expense of the homeowner. They came with rising payments, complicated strings attached, and a financier whose interests ran opposite to yours. The homeowner gave up much of the value of their own system.

So it may surprise you that Ecotech now offers a lease. I want to explain why.

The federal tax credit for homeowners ended last year, while the credit for commercial owners remains, for now. That left families paying more for the same system. Ecotech has joined with other mission-driven installers across the country to create Amicus Impact Cooperative to close that gap and extend the tax credit benefits to homeowners again. Because the cooperative owns the system at the start, it can claim the commercial credit and pass that value on to you as a lower cost.

There’s no outside investor waiting for a return. The cooperative exists to make solar more affordable for the people who use it.

That is the opposite of the leases I warned people about. This one is built to put more of the benefit in your hands, not less.

If you’d like to know whether it makes sense for your home, give us a call or learn more here. You’ll get the same straight answer from us you always have.
