Why do I need to wait for interconnection?
Last Updated May 27, 2025

Don’t flip the switch yet!

After your solar system is installed, the hard work is done — panels are up, wiring is complete, and your system is ready. But before you can start generating power and saving money, you need to wait for interconnection (aka Permission to Operate “PTO”).

What Is Interconnection?

Interconnection is the final step of going solar, and the moment when your utility verifies your system’s safety and readiness to connect to the grid.

A key part of this process is the utility replacing your standard electric meter with a special bidirectional net meter. This net meter can track both the electricity you use from the grid and the solar power you send back — allowing you to earn credits for your solar production.

Why the Wait?

Your system can’t feed electricity into the grid until the utility has approved the interconnection and installed the net meter. This step ensures safety for everyone and accurate tracking of your energy flow.

Once your electrical inspection is passed and your new meter is installed, you’ll be officially allowed to generate solar power and start benefiting from your investment.

If you have any questions about this process, we’re happy to help guide you through it.
